Beijing, June 23: Indian Ambassador to China Pradeep Kumar Rawat called on Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi ahead of the Virtual BRICS Summit via video conferencing hosted by President Xi Jinping. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also attend the summit. This is Rawat’s first meeting with Wang since taking over as India’s new ambassador to China in March.

The meeting between Rawat and Wang is considered important as it precedes the 14th BRICS summit. At the same time, the meeting is being hailed as important as it has soured bilateral relations due to the military standoff that erupted in Ladakh two years ago. As a result of military-level talks, the two sides completed the withdrawal of troops last year on the northern and southern shores of Lake Pangong and in the Gogra region.

The common interests of China and India are important

India has consistently said that peace and stability along the Line of Actual Control is the key to the overall development of bilateral relations. A statement issued by the Chinese Foreign Ministry on the occasion quoted Wang as saying that the common interests of China and India were more important than their differences. In such a scenario, the two sides should cooperate rather than weaken each other, strengthen cooperation rather than defense capabilities against each other and build mutual trust instead of doubting each other. .

Communicate with each other

The Chinese Foreign Minister said that the two sides should work closely with each other to bring the bilateral relations on the path of stable and healthy development as soon as possible. At the same time, we must jointly address the various global challenges and safeguard the common interests of China and India and the various developing countries. He called upon the two sides to adhere to the important strategic agreement reached by the leaders of the two countries, emphasize the appropriate position of the border issue within the bilateral relations and find a solution through dialogue and consultation.

China is chairing the BRICS

Beijing is chairing a five-member BRICS summit in Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa this year. On Wednesday, Xi and Modi, along with other BRICS heads of state, addressed the BRICS Business Forum. Wang came to India in March. He also held talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and National Security Adviser Ajit Dovala.
