Construction of roads at record speed
Nitin Gadkari said that 70 per cent of the country’s freight traffic, 90 per cent of passenger traffic is on the road. In this case, we are preparing a new Green Express Highway. We are building 42 such green expressways. Gadkari said that we are building 38 km of roads every day. Our department has set four world records. A maximum of 38 km of roads were constructed every day, 2.5 km of four lane road was constructed in just 24 hours, 16 km of single lane road was constructed in 21 hours. “The Opposition questions our claim but I want to make it clear that the policy of assessing the pace of road construction is the same as before,” Gadkari said. Whether we are building a two lane, three lane or four lane road, it counts only one kilometer in total. If we are building a single road then it is being counted as one kilometer and if we are constructing 8 lane road then it is being counted as one kilometer.
Construction of the fast-moving Mansarovar tunnel in Jammu will begin next year
We are doing projects worth Rs 60,000 crore in Jammu and Kashmir alone. It was very difficult to reach Srinagar from all over Ladakh and Leh, but 1000 people are working together in Jojija tunnel, this road will be completed before 2024. A permanent tunnel has been constructed from Shimla to Manali, earlier it took 3.5 hours, now it takes 8 minutes. The view after leaving here is very beautiful. We are constructing 5 direct tunnels between Ladakh to Kargil, Karigal to Chhedamor and Chhedamor to Srinagar. When this tunnel goes from Srinagar to Jammu, we will connect Katra to Delhi on the road before Katra, it will come from Amritsar. You will reach Mumbai within 20 hours from Srinagar before the end of this year. The construction of Mansarovar road will be completed by 2023 and people will be able to go there from India only, they will not have to go there via Nepal and China.
Many cities are only 2 hours away from Delhi
From Delhi to Jaipur in two hours, from Delhi to Haridwar in two hours, from Delhi to Dehradun in two hours, from Delhi to Amritsar in four hours, from Delhi to Mumbai in 12 hours, we will complete this work this year. We are building a road from Chennai to Bengaluru, it will be completed in two hours. Gadkari said that our government had come to power in 2014. The Jozilla tunnel was approved in the previous government, tenders were issued four times but its cost was also canceled due to increase. I called people from Norway around the world and asked them to analyze the cost of the tunnel. The total cost was Rs 12,000 crore but we saved Rs 5,000 crore.
Reduced the cost of building bridges
I have built roads worth Rs 50 lakh crore so far but no contractor has ever met the Minister. I would like to say that we are building as many bridges as we want to build on the Ganges. We have built more Ganga bridges in the last seven years than ever before. We have given the budget to build the bridges we asked for in Brahmaputra. We have brought new technology, Singapore-Malaysia technology has come. The distance between two pillars in the construction of a bridge in the metro is 30 meters while in the new technology this distance can be up to 120 meters. We built the Majoli Bridge using new technology at a cost of only Rs. 680 crore, which was earlier to be built at a cost of Rs. 6000 crore.
Better roads will save money
Taxation is not our pride but our compulsion because we do not have the money to build it. Citing the Delhi-Meerut highway as an example, Gadkari said the journey from Delhi to Meerut took a long time, about four hours. But now people can cover this distance in just 40 minutes. Reducing the distance saves people’s petrol and from this we collect toll from the people. The Delhi-Mumbai highway will take 12 hours to complete, saving both time and petrol. I assure you that in order to fulfill the Prime Minister’s dream of self-reliance, we have to increase exports, for which we have to reduce logistics costs.
High quality of roads
Gadkari said that not a single hole has been dug in the last five years. The problem was that at first we did not build the road but repaired it. No matter how much it rains, there are no potholes on this road. We have improved road quality. Gadkari said, “We have a plan called Sethu Bharatam. I announce that under this plan we will now build all the railway bridges.” Gadkari said it was not right to cut down trees. We will not cut down the trees, but we will connect the trees, transplant them. We will train 1000 contractors who will transplant the trees, we will pay them per tree.
