The bodies of Army Lance Naik Chandrasekhar Harbola from Haldwani, Uttarakhand, who went missing in Siachen in 1984, have been found after 38 years from Siachen, the highest battlefield in the world. When his wife Shanti Devi (63) got this information, she was stunned. Later, his health deteriorated and he was admitted to the hospital. His recovery was informed by the officials of 19 Kumaon Regiment of the army on Sunday.

Lance Naik Chandrasekhar Harbola was originally a resident of village Binta Hathikhur under Ranikhet tehsil of Almora district of Uttarakhand. Harbola joined the Kumaon Regiment in 1971. In May 1984, battalion leader Lt. P.S. A team of 19 soldiers headed by Pundir left for Operation Meghdoot. In 1984, he was caught in an avalanche while on duty. Later the army searched it but none of their bodies were found.

He said, ‘It has been almost 38 years. And now all the old wounds have reopened… I was 25 when they went missing. We got married in 1975. My two daughters were very young when he disappeared nine years later. One was four and a half years old and the other one and a half years old. After Lance Naik’s martyrdom, his wife did not marry, devoting her entire life to raising children.

Harbola’s daughter Kavita is now 42 years old. On learning about the 38-year-old father, Kavita says she doesn’t know whether to be happy or sad. His family has been estranged from his father for a long time. Kavita said, ‘We didn’t expect them to meet after such a long time. Now at least now we will have peace after performing his last rites as per Hindu tradition. Papa is home but I wish he was alive and here to celebrate Independence Day with everyone.
