Mulberry, ark. , Three Arkansas law enforcement officers were suspended on Sunday following outrage over a video on social media that appeared to show two deputies and an officer arresting a suspect.
Crawford County Sheriff Jimmy Damante issued a statement Sunday evening, saying two county deputies would be suspended during an Arkansas State Police investigation into the incident and an internal investigation by the Sheriff’s Office. A police officer of Mulberry has also been suspended.
“I hold all my employees accountable for their actions and will take appropriate steps in this matter,” Damante said.
In a statement released on Sunday evening, Mulberry Police Chief Shannon Gregory said officers involved in the incident are on leave until the results of the investigation.
“Mulberry City and the Mulberry Police Department take these investigations very seriously,” Gregory said.
According to police, a report indicated that a man was threatening a convenience store employee at Mulberry on Sunday morning. Mulberry is located approximately 137 miles (220.48 kilometers) northwest of Little Rock.
Police said when officers confronted the man, he pushed a deputy to the ground and punched him in the back of the head, leading to the arrest seen in the video. In the video, three law enforcement officers are seen running over the suspect, occasionally hitting him with fists.
The unidentified person was arrested and taken to a local hospital. Police said he faces charges of making terroristic threats, resisting arrest and other assaults.
No further information was immediately available.
