Israeli airstrike on Gaza kills senior man in Palestinian terrorist group

TEL AVIV — Israel carried out several airstrikes on the Gaza Strip on Friday, and the Palestinian terrorist group Islamic Jihad said a senior man in one of the attacks was killed.

The airstrikes ended nearly a week after tensions erupted in the West Bank following the arrest of another senior terrorist from the same group.

A senior Israeli defense official said the attacks targeted Islamic Jihad and targeted several targets, including an apartment building in Gaza and at least four terrorists carrying anti-tank missiles. According to the health ministry in Gaza, at least seven people, including a 5-year-old girl, were killed and about 40 civilians were injured.

Islamic Jihadi Said that a commander of its military wing identified as Taisir al-Jabri was killed. ,

“The enemy has started a war targeting our people and we all need to protect ourselves and our people,” a statement from Islamic Jihad said.

An Israeli defense official said several people had been killed in the airstrikes and confirmed that one target was Mr. al-Jabri.

As smoke billowed over the skyline of Gazan and over the ground, rescuers and others gathered in an alleyway near the site where the Islamic Jihad commander was killed.

Israel closed crossings in the Gaza Strip this week in anticipation of a retaliatory strike following the arrest on Monday of another senior member of Islamic Jihad in the West Bank. Gaza has been under a strict blockade since 2007.
